Friday musings (ay mi morena!)

Does anyone know who is responsible for compensating the chicken farmers in Asia who have to kill their chickens? I'd be interested to know. UN? US? If they need a few bucks, I'm in. I could really do without a superflu in my world, and I'm afraid part of avoiding that nastiness is going to have to be killing a lot of chickens.

I listen to a lot of NPR, and they've been having all kinds of experts on their show Talk of the Nation (an excellent and civil mid-day talk show) about the avian flu (H5-N1, if you're keeping track). One of the things that came out while they were discussing treatment for a possible pandemic was that vaccines aren't that profitable, so drug companies are more interested in developing E.D. medication, heart-disease drugs, and other, more sexy drugs. We may really have hosed ourselves here, folks.

I've had the song "Cancion del Mariachi" in my head for days now. I have a recording of that song by Calexico, and it's great, but I still hear it as done by Los Lobos in the movie "Desperado" ... I'll see if there's a way to post the free mp3 that I got of the Calexico performance. The lyrics to that song are awesome. what's the word? Evocative. And easy to understand for someone who barely has any spanglish. I'm totally learning this song on both guitar and accordion.
