Cartoons

I heard an interview with R. Crumb a few days ago, and although their sensibilities are vastly different, I was reminded of my favorite humor cartoonist, James Thurber. I got really into him after reading "The Catbird Seat" in high school, and his comics are pleasantly dated but mostly funny, none the less.

I think I will be forming a petition soon, addressed to NBC, to show more diversity in the olympics. We have been talking about the games every day here in the office, and I've been talking about it with everyone I know, and I want to let the network know that people want to see more of the olympics than the glamour events. Ed posted about how he doesn't really care about the games, and I don't blame him. They've been showing way too much of the figure skating/ice dancing. My petition is going to be regarding Beijing-- please please please limit the gymnastics to three or four nights. Or put it on one of the other "Networks of NBC". I will watch an entire softball game. I will watch and cheer for handball, BMX (it's in!), and kayak slalom.

Will you?

EDIT: I linked the above picture (one of the five mascots for Beijing 2008) to the official Beijing Games website. There's a questionnaire there about your perception of the Torino games and what you want to see in '08. Remember, "Athletics" is Global English for Track and Field.

It's these two purple boxes that scroll down the page on the left and the right of the text. I tried to copy and past the link, but it didn't work. Some kind of php application.

Also, if you go to www.olympic.org there is a box on the right of the page that says "Participate and Win!" that is a link to the same survey.

Everytime I've turned on the olympics it has been the new snowbaording events. Maybe that has more to do with what time I turn them on.

I like some of the new events, like the motocross on snowboard thing.

Did you here about one of the teams being raided at their apartment for mandatory drug testing. The bit I saw on the news looked like they sent in the Italian police and carted everyone off like common criminals. As far as I know they all tested clean. They were under suspicion because a coach who had been banned was travelling with the team (austrian skiers I think)
