good lord this is a odd, funny, and slightly disturbing post.
na, not really, there are so many different kinds of fruit and they cross pollinate to make the fruit stand up to harsh conditions. the thick rind is one of those things. but i am sure they are not as fresh as they could be if you lived in a place that could grow fruit almost year round. i'll remember this for birthdays, holidays, etc.
