bending wood (yow!)

It's been a long time. I shouldn't have left you without a dope blog to wade through.

This weekend was constant work. Yard work, house work, a little of work work. But I did get on my longboard project, so I have some pics I took while I was working on that (and watching a Godfather Marathon-- "I knew you were the one, Fredo. You broke my heart...")

Anyway, I used the dry shaping method found on

Toothless website ("Not a brand-- Still for fun") and I think it'll turn out nice. Here's the picture collage, from which I think you can get a feel for the method.

EDIT: After looking at this picture as it shows up on the blog, I thought I'd explain the pics.

Top Row, L-R: 5' x 5' sheet of Baltic Birch, bought in Pueblo, then ripped down on panel saw to 1' x 5' planks. 5 ply per plank, I will be using 2 planks to make the deck.

Second Row, L-R: Traced my design on the wood, drilled holes in the plank with the design(to become the top of the deck), wedged the two planks under a door, over a 2x4, and weighted down the tail end.

Third row, L-R: Glued the panels together, fit the boards into the jig, screwed the planks together in the curved shape, a couple clamps for good measure (where I couldn't put screws), and I wait about 2 days.

Anyway, I also did some other stuff this weekend (drywall, yard work, drinking), but nothing half as cool as making a skateboard.

Here's to a great week! Enjoy it.

Doing laminations is fun. I look forward to more pictures of the process.
