so, being 25, i never really got into the original star trek, but i LOVED tng. i have seen every episode, and used to love sundays just because there would be a new one on.
and i always thought cpt jean luc had such a great voice.
i don't know, there is something to say for being the originator. and although it's kitchy now, the original has the classic early tv feel. like, we're trying to make this guy look like an alien, so we'll slap some pointy ears on him. what, the vulcans and the romulans look pretty much alike?
also, original took on social issues (think the episode where one guy was black and white and he hated the guy that was white and black).
and then you have silly classics like trouble with tribbles.
but, then nextgen was a good series as well. special effects had come a long way, aliens didn't just look like guys with paint on, etc. and patrick stewart, yes, he was a great captain. the voice. awesome.
yet, with picard, you lost some of that virility of the captain. kirk was an asskicking fool. he was charming. the guys wanted to be him and the girls want to be with him. (he's the new duff spokesman.) brash, dangerous, kirk. picard inspires following, like a general. kirk inspires following because he's going there with you.
finally, the movies from the original cast kick the news one's collective rear. there is a trend of odd movies being bad, even movies great or at least better. really, wrath of khan has got to be one of the top ten sci-fi movies of all time.
so, considering the whole package: i enjoyed next gen, but i'm siding with old school star trek
I remember watching a TNG episode where everyone was androgynous and bisexual and someone fell in love with Riker and it was forbidden and they were oppressed because they wanted to have a heeterosexual relationship. It's as transparent as the Black/White//White/Black old school episode.
Writing that made me think that Riker filled in the machismo-duke it out-get the girl slot for the Next Generation.
Becky, nobody had their own Data. He had himself. You can't own people. ooh, but is he a person? There were a few episodes where people had problems with that issue.
i concede that nextgen had socail commentary episodes. i guess i just don't remember them as well.
and number 2, err, number 1, was supposed to fulfill that machismo, i guess. how is he supposed to be macho and tough dating troy? he's a sensitive 90's guy. not an ass whipping leatherneck.
and, speaking of deanna troy, wtf? you've got a sensy-counselor type on your starship? i thought star trek was about flying about the universe, hooking up with space booty, and fighting the klingons. it's not about personal relationships. or that redheaded doctor. she stunk. and her crappy kid wesley. really? you've got little kids on your space ship? that's hardcore. oh wait, that's just stupid.
i also liked that lavar burton (laforge) was on tng. one of his 'reading rainbow' shows was dedicated to tng and the whole time was spent watching how they put on the faces of various aliens, how they make the ship look like it was flying in space, and how the were beamed up. very interesting.

Even machines break down over time Becky. Besides, you really think Data could get that pink stain out of your carpet?
