Cough it up

This is really worth a browse (obrigado, Elsa):
The Foundation Center List of Famous and Celebrity Philanthropists

-------------------------------
And winning today's Cough it Up Award (something I just invented):

Christina Aguilera, 24, reportedly earned a mountain of money to serenade Russian moneybags banker Andrei Melnichenko and his blushing bride, model and former Miss Yugoslavia Alexandra Kokotovic, at their weekend vow-swapping in the South of France.
Reports vary as to the terms of the deal, with Sky News claiming the pint-sized singer earned $2.2 million for two songs while the London Mirror says she took home $3.7 million for a trio of tunes. Either way, Xtina seemingly netted more than a million per ditty, not a bad payday for about 30 minutes of work.(
from MSN.com)

Xtina, you know I love you, but cough it up. What good are you going to do with all that money?

There are numerous charities listed on my girl's site, so if one of those receives a $2.2M or $3.7M donation in the next few days, I'll be here saying she's the greatest. Wouldn't that be nice?

Who cares about celebrities? Of course they're selfish, it's their job. If they were all about the people things would be more dangerous. look at Ted Turner. One day he suggested Jane got off her ass and did something. That was in the late sixties. We all know what happened next...

yes, look at ted turner. he puts his considerable wealth to work. he buys land for conservation purposes. he's challenged the UN to match his spending on worldwide initiatives.

as celebrities, these people have the public eye on them. people will watch and follow their example. also, they have been given much, and so much should be expected of them. i know that the average citizen will give whatever they can. now my friend jay is asking for those who have surplus in the bank to do the same.

Yeah, Ted's a great guy. Got it. The real point is that we, as the dumb public, put way too much of our time into celebrities only to have them shit on us. Every thing they do is, in their minds, a calculated move to increase their fame. One last note: I hate Jane Fonda.

That's my point. We spend so much of our energy following these people. celebrities are the new sports teams. We follow them, hang on every piece of information... I just think we might be able to channel some of that energy into helping people who need it.

Let them enter the public's knowledge of their charity into the equation.
